Workshop on Economics and Complexity
Economic Complexity and Development Workshop 2018
The NeX-Nucleo of Economics and Complexity (PPGDE-UFPR) and SPRU-Science Policy Research Unit (Sussex University) in cooperation with Institute of Economics of UFRJ, are organizing the Workshop on Economic Complexity and Development: Growth, Structural Change and Macroeconomics for an Inclusive and Sustainable World. The Workshop will be an opportunity for academics, policy makers, and the public to discuss frontier research and its application to policy on topics related to economic development from a complexity perspective.
Economics and Complexity
Economics should help societies to achieve inclusive and sustainable growth and development. However, economic development is a complex phenomenon, involving heterogeneous agents and continuous innovations. Complexity is a challenge for economics. Understanding the unbalances and discontinuities in the process of economic development requires tools and thinking suited to deal with complex systems and evolving dynamics.
Theories and methods from complex science are helping scientists and policymakers to improve their understanding of the real world.
In social science, particularly, in economics, the science of complexity is helping economists to understand the interactions among heterogenous agents at different levels, connecting the micro-behaviour to macro emergent properties in completely new ways. Computational methods are allowing economists to explore the processes and the interaction among heterogeneous agents in environments characterized by strong uncertainties and endogenous radical changes such as innovation, structural change and global warming.
